Disaster and Climate Risk Reduction Clinics for Tourism Operators
A Climate-Resilient Marine Spatial Plan will guide the protection and sustainable use of the Virgin Islands’ marine environment. It will define key zones for conservation, fisheries, recreation, and development—supporting climate resilience while enabling a balanced blue economy.
Introduction
The tourism building stock remains vulnerable to severe weather events, including floods and stronger hurricanes which are becoming more intense with climate change. In 2017, category 5 Hurricane Irma either destroyed or severely damaged 95 to 98% of small coastal tourism properties in some areas.
Tourism property and business owners require technical support and guidance in planning climate-resilient strategies for their structures and operations and in developing climate-smart business continuity plans.
The Impact
This pilot initiative will support Disaster and Climate Risk Reduction Clinics for up to 50 tourism property and business owners across all industry sub-sectors.
Each Clinic will provide up to 8 hours of free consultancy time with a technical expert to assist tourism property and business owners with developing an overarching strategy / roadmap for building climate resilience and developing a Risk Management and Business Continuity Plan using a standard template and survey data obtained about the characteristics of the property / operation in advance of the Clinic.
